In the year 1986, Berhampur University offered the one year P.G. Diploma in Computer Applications as a sponsored programme of the Department of Electronics (DOE), Government of India. It was a majorinitiative taken by DOE to popularize computer educationacross the country. Later, in the year 1991 the three years Master in Computer Application programme was introduced with the joint sponsorship of UGC and DOE. Subsequently, in the year 1994 the Department of Computer Science was established as an independent department in the University. Since then the Department has played a very important role in imparting Computer education in the state of Odisha in general, and South Odisha in particular. It has produced many computer professionals who have established themselves in the field of education, research and IT industry both within India and abroad. In the year 2006, the Department widened its scope by introducingthe two yearsM.Tech. programme in Computer Science under self-financing mode.In all these years, the unrelenting services of the qualified and dedicated teachers and professionally motivated students have been the strength of the department in imparting quality education. Besides teaching the faculty members are also engaged in research activities in different frontier areas of computer science, and in interdisciplinary areas. About 25 students have received their Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees from the department in different areas of computer science. In order to inculcate a sound academic ambience the Department regularly organizes seminars, workshops, and invited talks.
The students of the Department are also involved in different outreach activities to popularize computer education among the school and college students who are underprivileged to have access to technology and recent developments in ICT.In order to equip the non-computer science students of the University, the Department has introduced an Add-on Course on Computer Applications for Development Professionals in collaboration with NIRD & PR, Hyderabad
Master Degree (M.C.A.)
About the Course
The MCA course spreads over a period of 3 years divided into six semesters with an intake of 30 students. In each semester there is theory as well as practical papers, except the sixth semester which is dedicated to a major software development project work to be undertaken by each student. The MCA curriculum has been designed keeping in view the requirements of the IT industry and also to serve as a foundation for higher studies in computer science. It comprises of both theoretical and practical aspects of computer science and applications. The curriculum is a balanced blend of computer science, applications, mathematics, and management subjects. After successful completion of this course a student can join the IT industry as a system professional or pursue research in the core areas of computer science and applications.
How to get Admission into the Course
In order to seek admission into the MCA programme a student must be a graduate with a good academic back ground. Besides this a student should qualify in the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the state of Odisha (O-JEE). Detail information about O-JEE can be obtained at http://www.odishajee.com.
Curriculum / Syllabus
The MCA programme comprises of Theory, practicals and software development projects. The classes are conducted between 10.30 am – 4.30 pm on all working days. The detailed time-table for the relevant semester can be obtained from the department office.
The Department offers Ph.D. in Computer Science in different frontier areas of research. After getting admitted to the programme a Ph.D. candidate has to undergo an one-semester course work as prescribed by the Department. The course comprises of two papers. The first paper is on research methodology which equips a student with the required knowledge to undertake serious research. The second paper emphasizes on some of the advanced areas of computer science namely, object oriented technology, database technology, network technology and service oriented computing. On successful completion of the course work a candidate has to submit a synopsis of the proposed research in consultation with his/her supervisor and complete other formalities for registration.
How to Enter into the Course Programme
Entry to the program is through University Research Eligibility Test (URET) conducted by Chairman PG Council, that is to be conducted once in a year, preferably in the month of November. Questions for the test include both objective and subjective type of questions covering the core areas of computer science at the Masters degree level.
Curriculum / Syllabi
A candidate who already posses a proven track record of high quality research can register for the D.Sc. programme in Computer Science. He/She can carry out further research and submit a thesis with his/her research findings for adjudication.
The Department has a well-equipped laboratory with desktop computers, LAN and Internet connectivity. It has all the required software as per the need of the curriculum to carry out practical classes in C, C++, Java, and Database. Students are encouraged to use open source software as far as practicable.
Students at Programming Lab
The classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors, computers and smart boards to facilitate ICT enabled teaching and learning. Classes are quite interactive in nature. Students are also encouraged to make use of the ICT tools to prepare their presentation and demonstrate the results of their project assignments in the classroom.
Students attending the classroom teaching
The Department encourages research in areas like Intelligent Systems, Data mining, Soft Computing, Network Security and Software Engineering. The research findings are published in international and national level journals and conference proceedings. The faculty members and research students regularly present their research papers in conferences both within and outside India. There are about 200 research publications of the Department.
UGC sponsored National Seminar on Advances in Information and Communication Technology (NSAICT-2013)
Workshop on Spoken Tutorial in collaboration with IIT Bombay
The Department has very strong and vibrant alumni who have contributed to the development of the department. BUMCA is the alias for the alumni association and a common meeting point of all the former students of the department. The activities of BUMCA can be followed at: www.bumca.com . The alumni members meet every two years in the University and contribute in terms of sharing of knowledge, holding of seminars, workshops, technical sessions etc. They also discuss industry perspectives and provide valuable input to enhance the curriculum to keep pace with the requirements of the IT industry.
