About Department

Introduction

The Department of Business Administration was established in the year 1986-87 by the UGC sanction order and AICTE approval. The Department is a life member of Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS). The Department offers two years (Four Semesters) regular course in Business Administration with an annual intake of 40 students. The first two semesters of the curriculum provides basic knowledge on business management including development of skills required by professional managements. First year covers core papers such as Principles and Practices of Management, Organisational Behaviour, Quantitative Methods, Managerial Economics, Accounting for Managers, Computer Application, and so on. Second year covers basically elective or specialization papers in the areas of Finance, Marketing, and Human Resource. Twenty core papers and eight elective papers of 100 marks and 4 credits each are taught in depth. For practical exposure, the students undergo summer internship programme (100 marks) of 6-8 weeks duration in different business organizations after the end of the first year. The Department also focuses on the objective of the doctoral research i.e. Ph. D in Business Administration and encourages original research in different aspects of management. We regularly organize seminars, conferences, alumni meet, workshops, and invited talks.

Objective of the Course

The objective of the MBA Course is to educate students from multi-disciplinary back ground with business management practices and managerial skills such as optimal decision making, problem solving, team work, leadership, etc. in a fast changing, highly competitive and uncertain corporate world. The students are encouraged for active participation in the class room, seminar presentations, case studies, group discussions, quizzes, business games, etc.

The students are motivated for entrepreneurship development for self-employment and employment generation. At the end of the course, the students are well prepared to become professional manager and make a career in private sector, public sector and government sector to achieve their individual as well as organisational goals effectively. Some students qualify UGC NET/ JRF to pursue research on business management area and to join teaching profession. The Alumni of the Department are well placed in reputed organizations  in India and abroad.

About Course Programme

How to Enter into the Course Programme

ADMISSION PROCEDURE: As prescribed by the Chairman, Orissa JEE. Admission Test is conducted by BPUT. The admission is done only on the basis of the entrance test. No group discussions or interviews are conducted for the purpose.

About Course Programme

The main objective of the Doctoral Research is to encourage original work in different aspects of management and to develop scholars who go on to contribute towards its growth through teaching and research. The Industry as well as the various Government Agencies has approached the Faculty for carrying out research in specific problem areas. The subjects covered include a wide variety of areas such as Marketing, Financial, Human Resource and Organizational Dimensions of Modern Industry & Business.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

A Master’s Degree in the relevant discipline with at least 55% of marks or an equivalent grade and 50% of marks or an equivalent grade for SC & ST and Physically challenged candidates of Berhampur University /Institution recognized by the University/UGC. The registration will be allowed in the subject in which the course will be carried out. Provided that college teachers and professionals with 15 years of experience can be allowed to register for Ph. D. with at least 48% of marks at Master’s level provided that that they qualify the URET. The details of Ph.D regulations of Berhampur University can be downloaded from the University website.

Dr.Satyanarayan Pathi is a Professor in Finance in the Department of Business Administration, Berhampur University, Odisha since1999. He received his M.Com and M.Phil, from Berhampur University, Odisha, and Ph.D in Commerce on Agricultural Credit, from Patna University, Bihar, India. Prior to joining in the Department of Business Administration, Berhampur University, he served at different colleges of Odisha as lecturer in Commerce. His research interests include Banking Services, On-line trading on stock & commodities, e-commerce, Management ethics & Spirituality, Six Sigma,TQM and various functional areas of Management. To his credit, he has about 30 research publications on different management topics in the journals of National and International repute along with 26 Research Scholars (22 Ph.D and 04 D.litt) in Business Administration and Six Books. He has published one Text Book “Modern Business Communication”, for students of BBA and MBA students. He was the Head of the Department, Coordinator of the Department, Member of Board of Studies of Business Administration, Chairman Board of Studies, Member of Academic Council, Coordinator for Business Administration two years Distance Education Course, Superintendent of different PG. Hostels, Warden PG Hostels, Director DEC. Examiner for OPSC and other Universities, Selection Committee member of different universities and many more. Prof. Anil Kumar Sahu Joined as Reader in the Department of Business Administration, Berhampur University in 1999 and subsequently he promoted to Professor in the year 2007. He did his Ph.D from Berhampur University, Berhampur  in 1993. His areas of interest is Human Resource Management and General Management.  He has successfully produced 7 Ph.D and one D.Litt Scholar in the area of Management .  He is the editor of 03 books and published in a reputed publisher.  Added to this, he has published nearly 30 articles in various national and international journals of repute in academia. To his credit, he has poses 34 years P.G. teaching experience and 15 years of research experience  from the beginning of his professional career. Dr. Susant Kumar Baral (b. 1964), MBA (Univ. of Poona), UGC NET (Mgt.), Ph. D. (Berhampur Univ.) is presently working as Professor & Head, PG Department of Business Administration and Dean, Management and Business Studies, Berhampur University. Prof. Baral is the Coordinator, Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA); Deputy Coordinator, Odisha Higher Education Programme for Excellence and Equity (OHEPEE- World Bank Funded Project); Member, Regulation Committee; Member, Academic Council, and Convener, Ethical Audit Committee, etc. The areas of specialization are Finance and General Management.  After qualifying UGC NET on Management during 1989-90, he joined as Lecturer in the Department of Business Administration, Berhampur University in 1991. After being awarded Doctoral Fellowship by Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi on salary protection and lien, he completed his doctoral research from Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar during 1996-98 and was awarded Ph. D in Business Administration from Berhampur University in 2001. The first paper of his doctoral research has been adjudged as  Best Paper  (Primary  Capital Market) by UTI Institute of Capital Market, Navy Mumbai  in 1997 (cash award of Rs 10000).  He has been short-listed for Fulbright Post Doctoral Research Fellowship by the US Educational Foundation in India for the period 2002-03. (One among three candidates short-listed among all B-Schools in India). He has been invited as the only scholar delegate from India to participate in the Seventh Annual Conf. on “Evolving Structures in Securities Markets” for CEOs of stock markets and regulators by the Georgetown University, Washington DC and the NASDAQ International during 20-21 September 2001 (all expenses borne by the Organizers). He has presented research paper entitled "Anomalies in IPO Market" in the 2000 FMA European Conference at Edinburgh during 24-26 May 2000 organised by Financial Management Association International (FMA), Florida, USA, London School of Business and University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He has presented research paper entitled “Primary Market Crisis in India:  Lesson for Emerging Markets” in the 1999 Eleventh PACAP/FMA Finance & Banking Conf. at Singapore during 8-10 July 1999 by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Financial Management. Association International (FMA), Florida, USA. He has presented research papers in international and national conferences/ seminars inside India. He has participated in many FDPs, Workshops, and other training programmes. He has 29 years of teaching and research experience. He has published many research papers in international and national journals and authored books. He has guided research scholars. He has developed MBA CBCS Curriculum 2020 and Pre-Ph. Nihar Ranjan Misra, an M.B.A. from Berhampur University with First  Class First  position  in 1990, joined the Faculty of Business Administration,  Berhampur University as Lecturer in 1993.Did his Ph.D. in Business Administration from B.U. in Consumer Behaviour. His area of specialization is marketing and area of vested interest is H.R.D. and General Management. With more than 27 years of teaching, guiding and research experience, presently placed as Reader in the department of Business Administration, B.U. has published research articles in many National and International Journals. Guided Ph.D Scholars and more than 200 dissertations. Did his FDP on Business Economics and Decisions from ICFAI, Hyderabad in 1995 and FDP on Banking and Financial Services through ICICI Bank, Mumbai in 2007.  Have completed UGC sponsored Orientation and Refresher Courses from IISW & BM, Kolkata, Pondicherry University and Annamalai University. Dr Suman Kalyan Chaudhury joined as Placement Officer in the Department of Business Administration, Berhampur University in 2011. He did his Ph. D from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar in 2002 and  got his D.Litt. Degree in 2019 from F.M. University, Balasore. His areas of interest are Finance, Accounting and Entrepreneurship Development.  He is an ardent researcher who has successfully guided scholars leading to award of 10 Ph. D thesis and 01 M. Phil thesis.  He is also the author of  04 text books and edited 46 volumes published by reputed publishing houses.  Added to this, he has published nearly 100 articles in various national and international journals of repute in academia. To his credit, he has a personification of 20 years of teaching experience, 10 years of research experience and industry experience of more than 3 years. He has participated and presented research papers in more than 80 international/national/regional conferences, seminars, Workshops etc. He has visited Nepal for presenting a paper at 3rd International Conference during 27th to 29th  March 2015. Further, Dr. Chaudhary is a life Member of All India Commerce Association, All India Accounting Association and all Odisha Commerce Association. Dr.Sunil Kumar Pradhan (b.1975) MBA, MFT, Ph.D, UGC NET (Management), is a distinguished scholar in the field of Marketing & International Business. Student Project Work

At the end of the First year, each student is required to undergo summer training of 4 to 8 weeks duration in any business organization of his/her own cost and risk. Further, each student shall prepare a project report under the guidance of a faculty member of the Department and present the same to the Head/Coordinator of the Department before 15 days of filling up of the University Examination application forms for THIRD SEMESTER. The project report reflects the work done by the candidates in the industry. Hence certificate from the competent person from industry in which the student has undergone summer training has to be enclosed with the project report. Beside the certificate from the guidance who supervised the project.
